Day 1 — Mekelle / Semera → Afar Desert
Leave the Highlands Behind
Meet your expedition team and begin the journey into the Danakil.
The paved roads gradually disappear as the landscape becomes increasingly remote.
Travel through the Afar lowlands toward the desert camp.
Along the way you may see:

Arrive at the camp and settle in.
As the heat begins to fade, head toward Lake Assal / Lake Asale for sunset when conditions permit.

Day 2 — Erta Ale Volcano 🌋
Into the Volcanic Wilderness
Today is dedicated to one of the Danakil’s great geological experiences.
Travel toward the Erta Ale area.
Depending on the current route and conditions, part of the journey may involve camel support and hiking toward the volcano. Some current itineraries describe a substantial hike to the volcanic area and overnight camping nearby.
The terrain is rough and the environment is extremely demanding.
But once you reach the volcanic landscape, the effort becomes part of the experience.

Day 3 — Erta Ale → Hamed Ela

Dark volcanic terrain gives way to enormous salt plains and desert landscapes.
Reach the camp and enjoy another evening in the Afar desert.

Day 4 — Dallol → Salt Mines → Return
The Colors of Dallol
Start early while temperatures are more manageable.
Travel toward the Dallol geothermal region.
Explore the extraordinary mineral formations and colorful geothermal landscape with your local expedition team.
Continue toward the salt-mining area, where you can see the traditional process of extracting and transporting salt.
Camel caravans remain an important visual part of the region’s traditional salt economy.
After the expedition, begin the journey back toward Mekelle or Semera depending on your selected itinerary.
